Squash - An Overview

What is squash? How do I play Squash? What does Squash Involve?

Squash an aerobic sport, one that requires a high fitness level to play; It can be a great social sport or competitive sport. Sadly people who do not play the sport tend to not know what it is, and stereotype it as a bad sport. But the squash is ever growing and will one day be one of the largest sports. If you already have a sound understanding of the Squash or you are a advanced player, then you may find you already know what i will be talking about and will not need to read this section.

Anyways, let's get down to it.

Squash is played with two players, a ball and a Racquet for each player. A rally begins with a serve, which I will explain later, then each player has a turn at hitting the squash ball anywhere on the court they want within the boundary lines. A Squash court is basically a room with a wooden floor and solid walls, the boundary lines on the squash court how where you can hit the ball and where you cannot.

Follow this link to see a diagram of a squash court and service details http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41390000/gif/_41390828_squash_court_416_2.gif

A you can see by the Diagram above there is a service line in the centre of the front wall. The way this works is you cannot hit the ball below this line when you serve. But in a rally the ball can go below this line. Serving involves keeping one foot in the service box (the box on each side of the court) and hitting the ball so it lands above the service line and then in the oppose back quarter of the court to where you served from. I will go into more details to do with the rules of serving later.

The squash ball is a small rubber ball about the size of a golf ball. It is hollow and can be 'squashed' hence the name the sport. This squashing action is what projects it of your raquet and the walls. There are a couple of types of squash balls. The most recognized include:

  • Double Yellow dot - lowest bounce
  • Yellow dot
  • Blue or progression ball - has the highest bounce
The reason there are different grades of balls are as a ball gets hotter it bounces higher but beginners cannot 'warm' the ball up sufficiently so they use a higher bouncing ball. Although I believe all players should start with a Yellow Dot and forget about the Blue ball.

Racquets will be explained in detail later.

Squash is a highly strategic game that requires a combination of Mental awareness, Skill and fitness to win. But what is most important is that the ball is hit away from your opponent and the most used shot should be into the back corners.

That was just a brief overview into the game of squash I will be going into more advanced concepts and more detailed descriptions of things such as Squash Raquets and Squash tactics.
